The coffee station, whether it is a simple set up or full blown kitchen, is always a good source of intrigue, gossip, and worker interaction. It seems though that regardless of the company, it is somehow left up to the workers to take care of paying for the coffee, be it directly or in the form of that nebulous, guilt provoking “donation” cup. An alternative to this is to turn the entire process into a game–a little office fun to spice things up. With this simple addition, its lighthearted simplicity is just the thing to settle tensions and increase worker productivity.
Setting up this sort of game is quite simple. The rules could range from a simple random chance oriented game for the more gambling inclined or crazy and complicated. A few basic ideas should suffice to get anyone’s juices flowing to model the game to their particular company and employee personalities. Of course, a game that is secretly contrived to get the bosses is to pay is best. Second to that, we all have co-workers that we would love to stick it to even if just in a light hearted manner. Regardless, anything is a bit more interesting than anonymously dropping change into that guilt cup. One easy idea is to simply hold a weighted lottery. On one end, participants could win back money they’ve put in plus something else (prizes, cash, etc.) On the other, they get stuck with the next purchase.
A slight modification to this concept could be to add some degree of skill. Trivia competitions, guessing the amount of change in the jar, or piggy–backing the coffee game outcome on sports statistics are all easy ideas to implement. The key is to suit the rules to the types of people that work together and what they enjoy. The rules to the game, though important in order to be enticing and interesting, are less important than the penalty for losing since, for most people, coffee is the lifeblood that keeps their workplace tolerable. That the loser pays for the next can of coffee is a joy that everyone at the office can share in - except the loser for that round.
As long as the game is kept simple, at least at first, the ordinary coffee station becomes an addition of excitement to the daily routine. Perhaps it may even develop into a tradition where you work and although not much of a resume builder, it should provide for a few good laughs.

The problem around my office is that the office is in a corner of my bedroom, and my “co-workers” are both under the age of 12! So coffee isn’t a real priority for them. Guess I’ll have to keep buying my own . . .
