Are the “Yeah, Buts” in Your Business or Organization Affecting Productivity?

Have you ever heard the “Yeah, Buts” in your business or organization? Yeah we can do that, but so and so or whatever is keeping us from doing that. How are all of these Yeah Buts affecting employee productivity and overall business results?

Yeah, Buts are truly amazing in how deeply they affect an organization’s goal to increase productivity. This phrase is so sneaky in that it acknowledges a problem, but provides permission not to take immediate action to correct it. They become an organization’s self fulfilling prophesy of doom and destruction.

These 2 words are systematic in nature because they can be traced back to the inability to efficiently and effectively execute the strategic plan. My own belief is that Yeah Buts are more about the inability to achieve goals than anything else.

When individuals and organizations know how to set and achieve their goals, a yeah but becomes an obstacle to be overcome. Action is taking by intensively thinking through the obstacles many of which are truly self imposed limitations.

In a recent book, Mobilizing Minds by Lowell Bryan & Claudia I. Joyce, their research revealed that companies with 35% or more workers who have thinking intensive jobs provided higher net income per employee. Over 20 years, this income per employee went from $24,000 in 1984 to $66,000 in 2004. People who have thinking intensive jobs for the most part do not have these 2 words within their lexicon.

Yeah, Buts are an excuse not to take action, to live in the current misery no matter how painful that is. I consistently see and hear of business owners who fail to take the time to craft a strategic plan. Yeah, I should have a plan, but I do not have time, but I do not have the money, but I am doing ok, etc.

The Yeah, Buts in your organization do affect overall productivity especially if you have a goal of improving employee productivity. If you want to increase productivity and ultimately make more money, then turn those Yeah Buts into challenges that you can achieve and begin to leverage all that gray matter.
