Effective Training

I went to visit a company to discuss their training and development policy and how effective it was and whether there were any improvements that could be made to improve organisational performance. First I spoke to the management team and the training administrator about the training that they undertook and looked through the systems and protocols for recording the training activities. All looked well and they talked a good talk. I then spoke to some of the employees about the training that they had recently attended. We got onto the subject of ladder safety training.

Using this as an example, we talked through how the course had gone. It was office based and the instructor went through all that you needed to do to make sure that you climbed a ladder safely. A little tongue-in-cheek I asked if they had actually climbed a ladder at the end of the course to demonstrate competence! To my dismay the individuals remarked that they hadn’t had any practical instruction and also had not used the prescribed equipment in the workplace since and as such had not remembered much of the training at all six weeks later. So, how effective was the training? Well there were lots of certificates in the file, the training matrix was completed with the ticks in the right boxes, but had the trainees actually gained any knowledge and would the training prevent any future accidents?

Confucius is reported to have said that “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” A critical quote to remember for all trainers, mentors or coaches - it is an easy option to deliver training by telling people what they must do. It is not so easy to provide support to people whilst they find out how to do something for themselves when they still have you around to correct their mistakes. So don’t be fooled by all the completed tick boxes and certificates of attendance in the file - go out into the workplace and check the training has been effective.
