Collaboration is important for your future. Let’s look at your future expectations by viewing the past. How did you celebrate a recent event of importance to you?
Thinking back upon a childhood memory, I remember looking forward to Easter. This was when I received a new pair of shoes and new clothing for Easter Sunday. It was a happy time. But, one year it didnt happenI didnt get my new shoes and clothes. I remember being completely disappointed. To this day I carry that memory. While I do not let the childhood memory immobilize me, its still present in my consciousness.
People, organizations, places and events can easily fall short of our expectations. Often our expectations of others are unrealistic. Perhaps you have a similar memory in your brains dusty old-tape file.
If you do, hopefully you dont let the memory immobilize you today. Back to your recent experience? Was it what you thought it would be? Was there any feeling unfulfilled? If so, this feeling of unfulfilled expectations can cause a myriad of complications in all the areas of your life if you allow it to. If you havewhen did you last allow unfulfilled expectations to immobilize you? How did you get out of your funk? Getting out of the immobilization is the success secret too few realize.
Life can be quite challenging when your expectations are not met. What are your expectations for the future? Expectations come in all forms, expectations of your business, of your partners, of yourself and of others. Since you really do not have control over others, it is best not put much energy there. Where you do want to put energy is in areas where you have control. You do have control over your own behavior decisions. Your behavior choices set both an example and expectations for yourself and by others. Which of your behavior decisions should be reengineered?
Your behavior determines your achievement, rather than the perceived limitations from childhood memories. You are accountable to fulfill your own expectations. As a business owner, manager or executive, you are also accountable to assist your employees in achieving their expectations.
High on my list of behavior recommendations is what I call embracing the Partnering Paradigm. Partnering is important to your business expectations both internally and externally. In business situations you will seek external partners to develop strategic alliances. Within your company, look for new strategies to help your employees have the Emotional Ownership necessary to act as if the employee were an ownerto take intelligent risks essential for business growth.
Partnering is also helpful in personal expectations. The person you choose to be is the key to all that has been said. Your internal conversations that you have with yourself are what determine your behavior decisions. To achieve your personal expectations, you must control your behavior. To do this be careful of the negative information you unknowingly let slip into your brain.
In your personal life you have behavior issues internal to your family. I find this area a challenge in my own life. Balance between career and family is so important to long-term success. How I interact with my family can sometimes cause problems. I frequently catch myself allowing the communication with my teenage son to be mostly negative in dealing with my expectations of his behavior. When I catch myself exhibiting this behavior, I try (not always successful) to change course. What personal behaviors must you adjust so you can meet your own expectations?
Here’s a thought; rather than making the obligatory yearly resolution that is soon abandonedfrequently review your life’s compass to be sure your on the right path. Be careful not to follow bright shinny objects that may be distracting you from your journey. My hope for you that like the Phoenix rising anew from the ashes of devastation, you allow your compass to be your new symbol for change and rebirth.
The decision to adopt Partnering behavior throughout your personal and work life, hopefully the path of collaboration, which can create enormous value in many areas of your life. Both in your business and personal life cooperation and collaboration will bring you closer to your desires. You will also find a new feeling of balance in your life. Again, what are your expectations? And, will you resolve to make the behavior decisions necessary to achieve your expectations?
Seek your collaborative advantage.
