Writing a Business Plan and truly participating in the planning process are two different things. The operations are an essential part of the business and these business operations must be refined and the planning for that can never stop. Nevertheless you will need to plan your operations from the first rough draft. I would like to give an example of an operations statement rough draft for a first rendition of a business plan.
Below please find a sample of such a statement. This is for a real product designed by Charles Shooster in the 1990’s for the oral hygiene market:
OPERATIONS
The great thing about our web-based interactive ordering site is that it allows for international sales regardless of time zones, meaning we are a 24/7 operation. Los Angeles time is well known in the world and will serve as the time zone of our choosing for our operations, however customer calls will be taken throughout the normal waking LA hours.
Our Interactive Website will incorporate UPS or FED EX shipment look-ups by tracking number. It will also give estimated times of ship-out and delivery of our products to our paid customers. We will have our manufacturers drop ship to the fulfillment center for packaging and shipping, until we grow large enough to warrant doing this in-house.
If and when we begin doing our own shipping we may also end up doing our own manufacturing. If we do end up self-manufacturing, we not be in California, most likely Las Vegas Nevada or Phoenix Arizona. We may keep the same tele-sales as a remote division or with a group of outsourced sales people in LA. Self-manufacturing, will be mostly automated with thermo-plastic welding and a quick assembly line for packaging. The US Mail, UPS and FED EX will pick-up every business day.

From here we can build upon the first rough draft. I certainly hope this article will help you in your development of a great business plan worthy of investor capital.
